Birthday: Abdulsalami Abubakar Turns 83 Today!

Abdulsalami Abubakar (born June 13, 1942) is a Nigerian statesman and retired Nigerian Army general who served as the de facto President of Nigeria from 1998 to 1999. He was also Chief of Defence Staff between 1993 and 1998. He succeeded General Sani Abacha upon his death.

During his leadership, Nigeria adopted a modified version of the 1979 constitution, which provided for multiparty elections. He transferred power to president-elect Olusegun Obasanjo on 29 May 1999. He is the current Chairman of the National Peace Committee.

Abubakar from the Hausa ethnic group was born on 13 June 1942 to his father Abubakar Jibrin and his mother Fatikande Mohammed, in Minna, Niger State, Nigeria.

From 1950 to 1956 he attended Minna Native Authority Primary school. From 1957 to 1962, he had his secondary school education at Government College, Bida, Niger State. From January to October 1963 he studied at Kaduna Technical College.

Presidency

Nigeria had been ruled by military leaders since Muhammadu Buhari seized power from Shehu Shagari in a 1983 coup. Although democratic elections had been held in 1993, they were annulled by General Ibrahim Babangida. Reported to have had an initial reluctance to accepting the position, Abubakar was sworn in as president on 9 June 1998 after the unexpected death of Abacha. He declared a weeklong period of national mourning.

A few days after assuming office, Abubakar promised to hold elections within a year and transfer power to an elected president. He established the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), appointing former Supreme Court Justice Ephraim Akpata as chairman. The INEC held a series of elections first for Local Government Areas in December 1998, then for State Assemblies and Governors, National Assemblies and finally for the President on 27 February 1999. Although efforts were made to ensure that the elections were free and fair, there were widespread irregularities that drew criticism from foreign observers.

Transfer of power

Surprising some critics of the country's military, in May 1999 General Abubakar, handed over power to the newly elected civilian president, Olusegun Obasanjo and retired from the army.

This is very correct and more people need to recognise this.

With out a doubt, history has proven that this man is the true hero of Nigeria's current democracy. In fact only MKO Abiola trumps him as far as I am concerned. Think about it, a military man that chose in less than one year to do what other failed to do for almost 25 years and relinquish power without violence, force or threats.

Again look at the so called democrats that followed him:

OBJ after enjoying a fair initial election ensured he used state apparatus to enforce his 2nd term victory and those of his lieutenants all over Nigeria. Next thing you know, we are seeing his efforts to ensure he subverted the constitution and did a 3rd term, forgetting where we were coning from or his intial leagacy 30 years earlier!

Yaradua was there too short so we could not see his true colours. However one cannot ignore the fact that he chose himself and his family over Nigeria, by ensuring that despite the fact he was too sick to rule, he would make it difficult for other competent people and leave a whole Nigeria to his wife to be making decisions!!

GEJ, started off well and then went to campaign that he only wanted to finish Yaradua's 2nd term . Only for him to then change his mind and finish what his godfather OBJ started.

Buhari's sin was he was always a bad loser after elections he lost, some fairly and other quite unfairly. However If he really loved Nigeria more than his ambition, he would have tried to douse tension anytime he noticed innocent people were being killed for his mandate that eventually ended up not changing much for the common man he claimed he fought for.

And finally, BAT, well we can see clearly that after only one year, all his cohorts faced squarely 2027 and are making it clear, in words and in actions that in no way should anyone even let the thought cross their mind that there is a vacancy in Aso Rock till 2031!

These 4 people were the beneficiaries of the sacrifice by General Abubakar....and few can dispute that these 4 people are very representative of the typical Nigerian behaviour.

Thank you again sir and you will definitely be ed properly by us that take history seriously.
