Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Dr Olisa Agbakoba, has said that President Bola Tinubu cannot achieve any meaningful economic reform with the current political governance structure in the country.

Agbakoba stated this on Friday while fielding questions on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.

The senior lawyer suggested that Tinubu should take some of the powers vested in the exclusive legislative list and transfer them to the state government.

He said: “Right now, the streets are not showing it. It’s a different thing. When the National Bureau of Statistics announces a GDP growth rate of 3.3 per cent, is it happening on the ground where garri, rice, beans, palm oil are crippling people?

“So the President’s responsibility, which he demonstrated yesterday, is to take on the final two years with vigour.

“He cannot achieve any economic, meaningful economic reform in the context of the current political governance structure.

“Some say restructure, some call it decentralisation, others call it rebalancing. Some call it devolution, whatever name it is, the President, please take some of the powers that have been vested in the exclusive legislative list and transfer them to the state government.

“And the state government itself needs to transfer serious power, real political power, to the 774 local governments so we can have a broad-based three-tier government all focused on the delivery of services.

“All Nigerians want are services: education, health, jobs, security of tenure, good pension, that’s all they want. And the only way that can be achieved is to rejig Nigeria.”

Tinubu might have good intentions, but I doubt he has the know-how of making it into limelight. He kept making economic mistakes upon mistakes. Another problem is the presidency is surrounded by sycophants. This folks have nothing to loose in the failure of his government. If Tinubu can get ahead of this sycophants, he might make better meaning.

Reminds me of a past commandant in the defence Academy, Emeka..... Won't mention is surname. The general will go to lines by midnight to make sure cadets were not serving job. He will even wear Salala and different batallion vest to mix with cadets in mess. He made reforms and double checked what CBC DMT and principal officers were telling him was the reality. His time was the best in academy to cadets, soldiers and even civilian staffs. Bottomline, its not about making reforms on paper, making sure the reforms are carried out makes it worthwhile.

It amazes one to note that despite the unprecedented FAAC allocations to the States, no one borders to ask the State Governors what they do with these humongous sums.

All eyes are simply on the centre.

Haba!

Grammar and semantics to defend inanities as usual!
Tinubu said he applied for the job and got it and he came prepared to tackle the myriad of Nigeria's problems but midway into his four-year term the indicators are not encouraging.

Tinubu would make meaningful progress for Nigeria and you Agbakoba would live to see it. Tinubu is intelligent and smart , he has his cards to his chest. He rolls out his plans for Nigeria one after the other . You Agbakoba can never predict or know Tinubu's secret plans which at the end of the day would usher Nigeria into the land of prosperity and the nation we would all be proud of.

Tinubu doesn’t want to make Nigeria better but prefers it gets worse every day, because if he truly wants a better Nigeria look at his economic team. Since he has chosen to run a Yoruba tribal government, why not appoint the best Yoruba have to offer at home and overseas to transform Nigeria or is that one a rocket science too for anyone that genuinely loves their own country?

what are the current structures that are preventing tinubu from making progress?

is it the current structures that made tinubu to unconstitutionally appoint a sole in rivers or that enables budget padding or that enabled tinubu to buy a new plane even after he asked nigerians to make sacrifices?

how has the "number one presido" successfully tackled corruption, nepotism, cronyism, hunger, unemployment, hardship, poverty, inflation, wasteful government spending, budget padding, insecurity, bad governance, failing public infrastructure, poor medial services and falling standard of education?
