Senate Spokesman Yemi Adaramodu on Friday said Nigeria’s democracy would be jeopardised if lawmakers in the two legislative arms transit from full-time to part-time.

“If the parliament is on part-time, then it means democracy is on part-time,” he said on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme. “There is no democracy that derides its parliament and thrives.”

He argued that the parliament is the bastion and fulcrum of democracy and no level of cost-cutting should affect the allocations that go to lawmakers.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker representing Ekiti South Senatorial District said beyond law-making and oversight functions on the executive, the 109 Senators in the Senate and the 360 of the House of Representatives shoulder the responsibilities of their constituents.

He said, “The Nigerian parliament is not only for lawmaking; we do oversight function. We advocate for our constituents.

“It will just be bewildering that even out of the three arms of government that we have in Nigeria, it is only the parliament and parliamentarians that our people have access to. Like me and others.

“We go home almost every time and we are the ones when they give birth to a new baby, they ask for naming ceremony funds. When they are building a new house, it is from us they ask for assistance.

“So, if the parliament was not there, who do you expect that our constituents would run to? The parliament is not just to sit down at the plenary and make laws alone. And when we make laws, we follow it up.”

The Senate spokesman said the National Assembly is the soft target of every critic but vehemently opposed the reduction of the money paid to lawmakers.

“If we are on part-time, can’t the same amount of money be paid to part-time legislators?” he asked.

“We are in Abuja, is it the National Assembly that is giving us housing? Is it the National Assembly that is employing domestic staff for us? We are here on our own.

“We don’t get allowances for drivers. The allowances we get from housing are always deducted from our salaries. They give it once in four years and they deduct it every month.”

He also said the official vehicles lawmakers get weren’t ed in their names and weren’t for them. He, however, did not clarify whether lawmakers inherit the vehicles after their tenure.

In the past, controversy has enveloped the monthly earnings of federal lawmakers. In August 2024, Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, said he got ₦13 million as Senator while current of the 10th Senate receive ₦21 million monthly. The upper chamber of the National Assembly immediately disproved the claim.

What do these NASS do? Nothing, we do not need any new laws, let the justices ensure the current ones are functioning. All the laws in the Bible and Quiran did not take 400 people sitting for 26 years to make. How many people created the 1999 constitution and for how long?
Nigeria DOES not need a bogus Legislature. UK, and many other democracies have one parliament that also function as executive. Do away with Rep and reduce senate to 73, two each per state plus 1 for Abuja.

This Nigga was a Local Government Chairman in Ekiti at 29. No records of him being of istrative, professional or economic value before then.

If not for politics, people like this one will starve. I'm sure, the mention of part-time legislature can cause him stroke.

Nigeria is a country with over 133 million multidimensionally poor, yet our lawmakers live like kings, bleeding the system dry under the guise of “constituent obligations.” The overhead cost of Nigeria’s government is one of the highest in the world relative to GDP – a parasitic elite structure modeled after 1960s European parliaments but funded by a dying petro-economy.

Let’s get real:
Full-time senators in Nigeria are a scam. With global 5G, cloud platforms, and end-to-end encryption, virtual parliamentary sessions are feasible. Estonia, with a digital GDP model, runs better democracy at a fraction of Nigeria’s cost. Even in the U.S., lawmakers don’t get “naming ceremony” funds. That’s not democracy – that’s feudal welfare politics.

Adaramodu wants citizens to believe that unless ₦21 million is spent monthly per senator, democracy dies? No sir. Democracy dies when legislators turn into rent collectors and budget-bandits.

If the only thing your constituents ask of you is cash and favors, that’s a failure of governance and systems – not a license for waste. Nigerians don’t owe you soft life because of your office. You owe them competence, not excuses.

We all know those who will oppose the proposal. Full time dullards who spend the entire time globetrotting while collecting full time salary and allowances for virtually doing nothing!

Already what you guys are doing is part time, imagine sitting just twice in month and recessing for 5 weeks, come on the work does not justify the pay and allowances

Well, you made them poor for them to be coming to you before they do any good thing. You know what you are doing.
This is how you come every four years to give them 10k in exchange of their vote.

Only God will judge you guys.

They are already on a part-time na.

How else can you describe a job you come to do twice in a month?

The best to right now is to reduce their ridiculous salaries and baseless allowances to correspond with their part time work.

If I have the power, I'd reduced their pay in line with the minimum wage and scrap all their allowances.

When these political offices become very less attractive financially, only serious minded people will contest for power

What do you expect him to say, as the mouthpiece of dishonorable honorables, he will defend the NASS. Nigeria only needs one of the two - the House of Reps, Senate is not needed. And even at that, the House of Reps should be part time. The two have been a financial burden on the country.
